For patients using GLP-1 medications like tirzepatide (Mounjaro®)
Dear Patients,
Recently, a patient on Mounjaro (tirzepatide) asked a question that was both insightful and highly relevant:
“I’m taking probiotics like Natren MegaDophilus—are they helping me in my weight loss journey, or could they be interfering with my treatment?”
This wasn’t just a personal curiosity it was a question that could matter to many of you using similar medications. And so, I turned to the research. Because when one person asks, chances are others are wondering too.
More importantly there is no such thing as a silly question. I’m notorious for it! Our curiosity is what drives medicine forward. We are all better when we seek to understand more deeply.
A Closer Look at the Product: Natren MegaDophilus
The probiotic in question Natren MegaDophilus® is a single-strain supplement containing Lactobacillus acidophilus NAS. It’s dairy-free, vegan, and designed to support upper intestinal health, digestion, and immune function.
So is it good for patients on weight loss injections like Mounjaro?
The answer lies in how your gut, medication, and microbiome interact.
What GLP-1 Medications Like Mounjaro Do to the Gut
GLP-1 receptor agonists like Mounjaro work by:
- 🧠 Reducing appetite via gut-brain hormone signaling
- 🕒 Slowing gastric emptying (making you feel full longer)
- 🦠 Altering gut microbiota composition (Zhang et al., 2024)
But while effective, they can also disrupt digestion, causing constipation, bloating, or nausea. That’s why a probiotic may seem like a helpful support strategy. And in many cases, it is.
Probiotics and Mounjaro: What the Evidence Shows
After reviewing systematic reviews and gut-brain literature, we found:
- ✅ Some probiotics reduce GI side effects of GLP-1s
- ⚠️ Natren MegaDophilus is not harmful, but its specific strain (NAS) lacks robust GLP-1-specific data
So:
- 🟡 Unlikely to interfere with weight loss meds
- 🔵 May help with digestion for some users
- 🧪 Needs more targeted research

Summary for Natren MegaDophilus Users
If you’re currently taking Natren MegaDophilus and:
- You feel digestive improvement
- You’re not experiencing worsening symptoms
- You’re following your Mounjaro plan
Then it’s likely fine to continue.
However, if you’re:
- Still dealing with bloating or irregularity
- Not noticing any positive effect
You might benefit more from switching to a clinically supported strain.
Why I Share These Answers
As your prescriber, it’s my role not just to offer treatment, but to explain why and how it helps you. When a patient brings me a question like this, I research it not just for them, but for all of you.
It’s not that probiotics like Natren don’t work. It’s that we don’t yet have enough research to be certain of how they interact with GLP-1 medications.
And that’s okay. In medicine, uncertainty is not failure, it’s the start of deeper inquiry.
So, Final Thoughts
If you’re on Mounjaro (or any GLP-1 injectable), and you’re using or considering probiotics, here’s what I recommend:
- 📦 Bring your probiotic bottle to your next appointment
- 🧾 Let’s review the label and ingredients together
- 📚 I’ll help explain what the science says and what it doesn’t yet say
Together, we’ll make decisions that are not just informed, but respectful of your individual body and goals.
Warmly,
