GLP-1 Weight Loss Injections, Pregnancy & Fertility
Can I take weight loss injections like Wegovy, Ozempic, or Mounjaro if I’m trying to get pregnant?
No. GLP-1 medications are not recommended during pregnancy. You must stop the medication for a specific “wash-out period” before trying to conceive:
- Wegovy / Ozempic (semaglutide): stop at least 2 months before trying to conceive
- Mounjaro (tirzepatide): stop at least 1 month before trying to conceive
- Saxenda / Victoza (liraglutide): may be stopped just before pregnancy, but still not advised without prescriber guidance
If you’re planning to conceive, please book a review with your prescriber to safely plan this transition.
Will Mounjaro interfere with my contraception?
It might. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptive pills, particularly in women with a higher BMI. To stay protected, we recommend:
- Using a non-oral contraceptive (like a coil, implant, or injection), or
- Adding barrier protection (e.g. condoms) for 4 weeks after starting treatment or increasing your dose.
Can I take weight loss injections if I’m breastfeeding?
No. GLP-1 medicines are not advised while breastfeeding, as we don’t yet have safety data on how they may affect a nursing infant. Your prescriber can help you explore safe alternatives.
Is it safe to buy GLP-1 medications online?
Only from a verified, registered UK pharmacy following a full medical consultation.
⚠️ Do not buy GLP-1 medications from social media, beauty clinics, or unregulated websites. Fake injectables can cause serious harm, and it’s illegal to supply prescription medicines this way.

Mounjaro & HRT Guidance:
1. Can Mounjaro affect my hormone replacement therapy?
Yes. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) slows digestion, which may reduce the absorption of oral HRT medications like estrogen or progesterone.
2. What are the signs my HRT might not be working well on Mounjaro?
You may experience return of menopausal symptoms or breakthrough bleeding. This can be a sign your hormone levels are too low.
3. Should I switch from oral HRT if I’m on Mounjaro?
In many cases, yes. Switching to a patch, gel, or Mirena coil is recommended to ensure reliable hormone absorption.
4. Can I continue using Mounjaro if I want to get pregnant?
No. Mounjaro should be stopped at least 1 month before trying to conceive, as advised by the MHRA.

Can I use Mounjaro if I’ve had my gallbladder removed?
Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) can generally be used in individuals who have had their gallbladder removed, but there are a few considerations we would keep in mind. After gallbladder removal, bile flows directly from the liver into the intestine, which can sometimes cause digestive issues, particularly when consuming high-fat meals. Mounjaro’s potential for gastrointestinal side effects (e.g., nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) might overlap or exacerbate these issues in some patients.
There is no specific contraindication for using Mounjaro in individuals without a gallbladder. Clinical trials and prescribing does not exclude this population.
Patients without a gallbladder may require closer monitoring for gastrointestinal side effects, especially during the initial weeks treatment. Mounjaro works best alongside dietary modifications, particularly those that avoid high-fat meals, which can be harder to digest without a gallbladder.
Can Mounjaro cause hair loss?
Hair loss is not listed as a known or common side effect of Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) in its clinical trials or prescribing information. However, some indirect factors could contribute to hair loss for individuals.
Mounjaro is highly effective in promoting significant weight loss, especially at higher doses. Rapid or significant weight loss can sometimes trigger temporary hair shedding, known as Telogen Effluvium. This occurs because the body prioritises essential functions over non-essential ones like hair growth during times of stress or nutrient deficiency.
Weight loss, particularly if not paired with a well-balanced diet, can lead to deficiencies in key nutrients like protein, iron, zinc and biotin, all of which are vital for hair health. These deficiencies might contribute to hair thinning or loss over time.
Chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes, which Mounjaro is prescribed to manage, can themselves contribute to hair loss due to hormonal imbalances, poor blood circulation, or systemic inflammation. Starting a new medication might also cause stress or anxiety for some patients, which could indirectly affect hair health.
No direct link between Mounjaro and hair loss was observed during its clinical trials.
Hair loss is not listed among common side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or decreased appetite.
Is Lansoprazole contra-indicated?
Lansoprazole (a proton pump inhibitor or PPI) and similar drugs are not contraindicated with Mounjaro (Tirzepatide). However, there are some things to consider and keep in mind. Both Mounjaro and PPI’s act on different pathways. Mounjaro regulates blood sugar and appetite, while Lansoprazole reduces stomach acid production.
Lansoprazole and Mounjaro can generally be used together without significant issues, as they don’t interact directly. However, monitor for any gastrointestinal symptoms or changes in medication effectiveness. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking to ensure safe and effective use.
Mounjaro can cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and sloed gastric emptying. The PPI’s (Lansoprazole, Omeprazole or Esomperazole) might mask certain symptoms or modify gastric acid levels, potentially affecting digestion.
Mounjaro slows gastric emptying as part of its mechanism to regulate sugar and appetite. While this doesn’t conflict with PPI’s, it might theoretically influence how other oral medications including Lansoprazole, are absorbed.
Can I take alongside Orlistat capsules?
Mounjaro and Orlistat can theoretically be used together for weight loss, however we do not recommend this regime. This combination may increase gastrointestinal side effects and the risk of nutrient deficiencies. Close monitoring by healthcare providers and a well-balance diet are essential for safe and effective use. Always discuss your medication regimen with your doctor to tailor it to your individual needs.
Does varying the injection site make a difference?
The site for Mounjaro does not significantly impact its effectiveness in managing weight loss or managing sugar levels. However, varying the injection site may influence factors like comfort, absorption rate and potential side effects. There are three recommended sites of administering subcutaneously (under the skin),
- Abdomen
- Thighs
- Upper arms
All three sites are equally effective for delivering the medication. The choice depends on personal preference and comfort. Rotating injection sites is useful as same injection site repeatedly can lead to skin irritation, bruising, or the formation of hard lumps (Lipodystrophy). Rotating sites reduces these risks and ensures consistent absorption.
While the site of injection does not affect Mounjaro’s effectiveness, rotating between approved sites helps prevent skin irritation and ensures long-term comfort. Stick to the prescribed dose and injection routing for optimal results. If you experience persistent skin issues or discomfort, consult your healthcare provider.
