At London PharmaClinic, we’re seeing more women start treatment with Mounjaro (tirzepatide) for weight loss, menopause symptom management, and type 2 diabetes. As healthcare providers, it’s important we help you understand how Mounjaro may affect your hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Whether you’re managing menopause symptoms or using HRT for long-term health benefits, this article explains how Mounjaro might interact with your hormone medications and what to do about it.
How Mounjaro Affects Hormone Replacement Therapy
Mounjaro slows digestion to help control appetite and support weight loss. However, this delayed gastric emptying can also reduce the absorption of oral medications, such as oral estrogen and oral progesterone, used in HRT.
If your body doesn’t fully absorb your HRT, your hormone levels might drop below effective thresholds, potentially leaving your uterine lining unprotected or your menopause symptoms unmanaged.
If You’re Taking Oral HRT:
Your HRT may be less effective during the first 4 weeks after:
- Starting Mounjaro
- Increasing your Mounjaro dose
✅ Recommended HRT Adjustments:
- Switch to non-oral estrogen: Transdermal patches or gels bypass digestion and offer more reliable absorption.
- Use a hormonal IUD (e.g., Mirena) or vaginal progesterone to maintain uterine protection.
- If you need to continue oral progesterone, your doctor may recommend temporarily increasing your dose for 4 weeks during Mounjaro dose changes.
👩⚕️ Tip: Always discuss your HRT plan with a healthcare provider familiar with weight loss medications like Mounjaro.
Already Using Non-Oral HRT?
If you’re already on a transdermal patch, gel, or a Mirena IUD, you’re in a strong position, these methods aren’t affected by Mounjaro’s impact on the digestive system.
Can I Use Mounjaro If I’m Trying to Get Pregnant?
No. You should not use Mounjaro if you are actively trying to conceive or are pregnant. The MHRA recommends waiting at least 1 month after stopping tirzepatide before trying to become pregnant.
